The average daily production was 4,520 t, slightly higher than that for the previous month and 31% lower than that for December 2008. Total aluminum recovered from scrap in December 2009 was 242,000 t, 3% lower than the total of the previous month and 7% higher than the total in December 2008. Of this, 141,000 t of aluminum was recovered from new scrap, 4% lower than the amount recovered in the previous month and slightly higher than that of December 2008. Aluminum recovered from old scrap in December 2009 totaled 101,000 t, which was slightly lower than that in November 2009 and 13% higher than the amount in December 2008. Primary aluminum production for 2009 was 1.73 million metric tons (Mt), 35% lower than that in 2008. Total aluminum recovered from scrap in 2009 was 3.08 Mt, 4% lower than that of 2008. Of this, 1.85 Mt of aluminum was recovered from new scrap, 9% lower than that in 2008, and 1.23 Mt of aluminum was recovered from old scrap, 3% higher than that in 2008. In December, the monthly average U.S. market price of primary aluminum ingot increased to $1.038 per pound from $0.931 per pound in November, and in January 2010, it increased to $1.069 per pound. The annual average U.S. market price of primary aluminum ingot was $0.794 per pound in 2009, 34% lower than the 2008 annual average price.
