Eugene, OR: Wipf and Stock, 2008, 201pp. + xi, $31.00.This book review will review the book entitled, The Making of the1963 Baptist Faith andMessage, written by A.J. Smith. In this assessment, will be determined the strengths and weaknesses of Smith, as well as the covering Southern Baptist Convention. Smith used extensiveresearch to document the progress of the Southern Baptist Convention and the Baptist Faith Message. president Herschel Hobbs. He wanted to establish the understanding of then, Southern Baptist, President Herschel Hobbs was believed to be the one who desired to stop the division of the denomination. His efforts that Smith writes about were in hopes to satisfy the liberal and conservative sections within the denomination. This review will determine to evaluate the effectiveness of Smith and the efforts of the SBC and the controversy behind it. Smith speaks of Hobbs who was responsible for the revision of the Baptist Faith and Message. The purpose of the BFM was to determine if the theological positions of the Southern Baptists would remain conservative, or if they were going to be liberal. Along with this there were situations taking place that made many people within the Southern Baptist faith to question just how sound the doctrinal statement was. Namely, “the publication of Ralph Elliott’s The Message of Genesis and questions about Dale Moody’s teaching on apostasy rocked the SBC.”
