X Y Problem 4-36 a) A is single and 44 years of age. He provides full support for his mother, who is 67 and lives in a small retirement community in A’s hometown. In this case he is to claim 1 Personal and 1 Dependency Exemption for his mother. 1) The taxpayer must be unmarried on the last day of the tax year. 2) The taxpayer must provide more than half of the cost of maintaining his or her home a household which is the principal place of abode for more than half of the year of: 3) A qualify child or a dependent familiar relative. In our case the mother and he provides full support for her. b) D and K are married and file a joint return for the year. D is 67 years of age and K is 62. They have no dependents. In this case we have only 2 personal exemption and o dependents exemption. c) E and O are married and file a joint return for the year. They provide all the support for their two younger children for the entire year. E and O also provide all the support for their oldest child (age 19) for the eight months she was a full- time student. After graduating from high school, she accepted as job that paid \$3000 in salary.
