Ashley McIntire English 217 4685 April 19, 2006 Essay #5 Lucky Day “Ashley,” Maria whispered. “What are we doing?” I slowly opened my eyes to a terrifying sight. Maria gazed at me with a blank stare; her left eyelid, the one closest to me, was sealed shut with dried blood. Her hair was matted in a sweaty, bloody paste. I began to shake. Not knowing what had happened I almost started to scream, but someone interrupted. “Miss, please stay calm; we are here to help.” I looked over out the hole where the van’s window used to be. It was the voice of our angels, the EMT’s. My eyes must have given away the horror and confusion that I felt. “Everything thing is okay, we’re going to try to get you out of this vehicle now.” I looked back at Maria’s tattered face then back to the EMT. “Her face…” I began. The man with the kind voice stopped me short; telling her will only scare her. Maria and I were laying in the back of my boyfriend’s minivan on the way back from a weekend ski-trip. We had let the seats down and constructed a bed on which Maria, Tony, and I could lay for the four-hour trip back. Of course, we had on no seatbelts.
