Townsend From: Lauren Hickey Date: April 2, 2010 Re: Status Report on spcaLA project Project We recently discussed the scope of our project with you and how we should not limit our vision to their resources. With this in mind when we visited the spcaLA Hawthorne facility this morning, we have some large-scale solutions to optimize the facility’s space and more permanent alternatives to covering the dog kennels. Also, we realized that the volunteers have no place to sit and eat lunch at the facility. Space Utilization We have several short term recommendations for this problem. The facility needs storage space, parking, and space for the dogs to exercise. Storage Currently, all the storage is underneath the outside cover, seen outlined in red in Figure 1 below. In an effort to consolidate space, the pallets holding animal food and supplies are placed around the columnar support for the cover. However, this actually breaks up the space available even more than if the storage was at just one end of the area. By placing the pallets around the columns, it just makes the area harder to navigate through. Figure Satellite image of facility.
