WRIT 340: Advanced Writing Communication for Engineers/Townsend Community Project: Providing Professional Services Assignment Summary Overview : You will plan and execute a consulting project for a community organization that can benefit from your knowledge and abilities as a team. Use communication, teamwork, and leadership skills throughout the project to produce a positive result for your client and a dynamic learning experience for your team. Objectives : One of the most important elements of an engineering educational experience is application – moving from the theoretical to the practical, from the classroom back to the workplace. This assignment provides that opportunity. The following are learning objectives you’ll find embedded in this assignment: Persuade your colleagues that you are a worthy teammate Persuade your colleagues that your project ideas are sound Work with client management to clearly and accurately identify the scope of the project Develop a proposal that establishes expectations Develop a detailed project management plan Complete a consulting project Improve your communication skills Practice working in a team Practice running effective team meetings Deliver a final oral presentation to client management Deliver a final report/proposal to the client Include a transmittal letter to client Evaluate your team, your project, and your participation as well as key learning points This project will be a valuable learning experience for you if you design a practical yet challenging project and work together to produce valuable results. Requirements : You will have a great deal of flexibility with this project in terms of the client and the work. Your bottom line charge is this: Create or deliver something of value to the client that allows you to learn and grow as well. To do this, you must develop a relationship with a client organization. The single greatest challenge of the project is likely to be identifying the organization’s problem or need and clearly and accurately defining the scope of the project in a way that will allow the organization to meet that need. You must complete the consulting project as promised. All team members must be actively involved throughout the project and each team member should take a leadership role in at least one aspect of the project. 2
