MCB104 Discussion Quiz 1 Section 102 (Tues 1-2p) 1. The evil Klaaxon Empire (they’re super evil) has discovered a drug that affects the ability of human cells to undergo nuclear export. Specifically, the drug inhibits the ability of Exportins to bind to NES-containing cargo. The evil Klaaxons hope to use this drug as their ultimate weapon, and so force you to tell them what the effects of the drug would be on the following activities (explain in a sentence what would be different for each, and why): a. (2 points) The export of small proteins like Ran Small proteins like Ran are able to diffuse THROUGH the nuclear pore without associating with exportins. So, no effect. b. (2 points) The export of newly made ribosome subunits Ribosomal subunits have NES signals on them which bind (indirectly) to exportins and get shipped out. This would be halted and they would accumulate in the nucleus. c. (2 points) The export of mRNA’s mRNA’s are exported through the nuclear pore, but by a different mechanism.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
