Race and Sport-today’s issue 01/10/2009 10:02:00 1. Does Sport reflect the same racial problems of society at large? 2. Is sport a mentocracy, immune from Racial overtones?  Is sport a model of equal opportunities for black people? 3. Does sport contribute to the upward mobility and success of black people? 80% do not receive a college degree of black basketball and football players 13% proportion of black people in the u.s poulation less than 13%  totally over represented beleife that the white athlete are racialized because of the lack of particpation 1947- Jackie robinson and broke the racial barriers to play on the Brooklyn  dodgers 1950- Alfia Gibson first black to play in the national tennis tournament 1961- charley sifford first black golfer to play on the pga tour 1963- boston celtic became the first integrated starting team of all black starting  line up
