Response Paper for The Bluest Eye Due March 22, 2010 The written assignment: Remember that we have said, “Theatre is the sum of a set of choices.” Drawing on specific information provided in class lectures and from guest speakers, in 2-3 pages you will address the question, “did the choices made by the playwright OR the director OR the designers of The Bluest Eye effectively support the story.” If you choose to discuss the director please remember the decisions a director makes – including (but not limited to) concept, casting, and blocking. Major questions your response paper should address are: What are three specific choices the director made? Why did those choices work or fail? And, most importantly, how did the choices support (or not support) the story? Be sure to support your contentions with AT LEAST 3 SPECIFIC examples from the production. If you choose to discuss design remember that the job of good design is to help tell the story. With that in mind, you may either cover design as a whole – discussing the major design elements – set (or its absence), sound, costumes, and lights -- or you may focus your entire response paper on one design element. Major questions your response paper should address are: What choices did the people in the area that you chose make? Why did those choices work or fail? And, most importantly, how did the choices support (or not support) the story? Be sure to support your contentions with AT LEAST 3 SPECIFIC examples from the production. Remember also, absence is a decision – so it would be valid to discuss the lack of a set or absence of props as a design choice. If you choose to discuss the playwright you will need to consider the lecture on dramaturgy and adaptation. You will want to look over the original novella on which the play is based, The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison. (There is no access to it on blackboard but it is easily available at bookstores and sites like amazon.com.) Your response paper should consider the choices the playwright made in adapting the novella for the stage. How did the playwright incorporate moments of description or exposition into the dialogue? How did the playwright shift the order of events in the play? Are the choices the playwright made effective? Be sure to support your contentions with AT LEAST 3 SPECIFIC examples from the play. Note that this is not a review:
