Covering Politics The reality of race and crime news Dixon and Linz and patterns of minority crime in news Effects of crime distortion (Gilliam and Lyengar; Valentino) Summary What is  News ?   o           The report of what a news organization has recently learned about matters of some  significance or interest to the specific community  that news organization  serves       Newsworthy   o             Journalists’ assessment of what stories are most important and  necessary to  report       3 Critical Elements of the News:   Timeliness Community Interest  and  Significance       Timeliness   o             The conveyance of information as soon as it’s learned   - The critical importance of timeliness necessarily limits news to  information that is superficial Community Interest   o             AKA appeals to community curiosity   o             Usually takes the form of human interest stories   o             People  stories evoking audience sympathy or identification   o             Other examples include:   -People stories – ordinary people acting in unusual ways -Role reversals – departures from the expected (“man bites dog”)

-Expose anecdotes – corruption in police dept/ cop convicted in drunk  driving/ condemn actors and activities that violate enduring activities -Hero stories –  ordinary people overcoming villains or nature -  -Gee-whiz stories – weird/ art cars/  stories that evoke surprise, such  as fads or freak occurances Significance   o             Events that happen “close to home”   o             Reporting of concrete events   o             Easily observable developments associated with news  stories     Bottom Line:  If these stories have been ingrained in our society and we know that a majority of people hold on to these values – profit motive – reporting stories people are expecting and going to retain audiences much easier   News Coverage of Politics   o             Personalized News   o         News that focuses on personalities, to which individuals can attach emotional  meaning                             ** i.e.  look what happened to this guy/ act of the person is undeserving of/ random act o             Dramatized News   o         News stories that focus on crisis, personality, and scandal  having a  convenient beginning, interesting middle, and  satisfying end   ** more in depth – entertainment twist
