CHBE 241 Material and Energy Balances Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering The University of British Columbia Assignment #1 Due: Friday, 19 September 2008, 4:30pm CHBE Main Office 1. Propylene glycol (1,2-propanediol) is a commodity chemical. What is the mass in pounds of 8 kmol of propylene glycol? What is the mass in kilograms of 0.25 lbmol of propylene glycol? 2. Alkanes, also known as paraffins, are chemical compounds that consist only of the elements carbon (C) and hydrogen (H), wherein these atoms are linked together exclusively by single bonds without any cyclic structure. Their general formula is C n H 2n + 2 . (a) Balance the stoichiometric equation for burning of propane. (b) Balance a general formula for alkanes: C n H 2n + 2 + O 2 = CO 2 + H 2 O. 3. The following chemical equations are not balanced. In each set, the first equation uses traditional chemical reagents and the second uses newer catalysts. Balance each equation. Compare the fractional atom economy for the (a) conventional and (b) catalytic reaction schemes in each set. Hydrogenation
