Montagu theorized that race was a complete social construct, based on our class systems and economic bases rather than a biological factor. Montagu’s ideas were based off the biological similarities that existed across the entire human race, and how these similarities far outnumbered the differences. This social construct idea has been accepted by many sociologists over the past 50 years, but has yet to be accepted by the general public. The idea of race as a modern social construct goes hand in hand with some of the actions taken be American citizens over the past hundred years. Groups such as the KKK or Civil Rights protestors based their entire belief system on race, and yet were fighting against men and women with the same DNA makeup within the same species. Race is also used as a social crutch, such as the stereotypical inner-city mother who is on welfare. While no race is given, a majority of people would assume the woman is Black or
