1. Started in 33AD by Peter, one of jesus’s apostles. Peter and his clergy preached the gospels, which were handed down by oral tradition and eventually written down, forming the New testament. The New Testament was put together with the Old testament, or the Torah, to form the modern day bible. During the middle ages, Catholicism spread to monasteries across Northern and Eastern Europe and it eventually worked its way down towards the Ottoman Empire. During the Rennaissance period, missionaries spread Catholicism to the far reaches of Asia, Africa and parts of south America. In 1534 English King Hnery the eight broke off of the catholic church, devlaring himself the head of the Church of England. In more modern times, the Catholic Church expanded across Russia, The newly formed countries in north america and various other parts of the world. The catholic church is the largest sect of the Christian church, including more than half of all Christians, which is more than 1/6 th of the population of the world. The catholic church is run by the Pope, who resides in the Vatican in Rome in italy.
