Sarah Benton Arch. 050:281 3/30/10 Col. Henry Rutgers Colonel Henry Rutgers is an obvious part of Rutgers University. His contribution of a thousand dollars in 1822, however, makes one wonder why this man is such an important part of the University, especially considering Reverend Elias Van Bunschooten’s bequeathment of almost $22,000 in 1814. Based on the “Benevolent Patriot – The Life and Times of Henry Rutgers” exhibit at the Alexander Library, I was able to surmise several reasons that we are currently attending Rutgers University, and not Van Bunschooten University, namely Rutgers’ decorated military past. This, and other important reasons, contributed to the renaming of the University in 1825. Henry Rutgers, son of two Dutch immigrants, was an early graduate of King’s College, or Columbia. He was a strong supporter of American independence, and proved himself many times on and off the battlefield to be a great military leader. He served as a captain and colonel in the New York Militia, and was pivotal in the American
