Lecture outline, Biology 152, 29 January 2010 Speciation II. In this lecture we will continue the transition from population level phenomena (microevolution) to species and higher taxonomic levels (macroevolution). We ll start with types of speciation and then move on to examples of rapid speciation and some spectacular adaptive radiations. General Topics: I. Modes of speciation a. Allopatric b. Sympatric II. Pace of speciation a. Polyploidy b. Monarch flycatchers c. In the lab III. Adaptive radiation a. Africa b. Hawaii Below are two actual answers to the essay question included in a previous lecture outline. Which do think scored better? Since the habitat of island A is identical to the mainland, the single female should not be the victim of natural selection.

Unformatted text preview: Genetic drift will occur here because one bird is not representative sample of the original population. Natural selection will occur with those who land on island B. Those who are more fit to living in a drier climate will successfully survive and reproduce. The effect of genetic drift will be less than on island A due to the larger sample size. Gene flow will be introduced to both islands but far more significantly to island B. Over the next several generations island A will be more populous than B because the birds on B will want off their dry island. Offspring will become more selective due to gene flow from the original generation on B to A. Birds on island B will develop more ways of catching prey, with their limited sources....
