Energy Captured (per glucose)? -4 ATP (2 from glycolysis, 2 from citric acid cycle) -10 NADH (from glycolysis, conversion of pyruvate to acetyl CoA, and citric acid cycle -2 FADH2 (citric acid cycle) Oxidative Phosphorylation -Electrons carried by NADH and FADH2 will be ultimately transferred to oxygen -Electrons are passed down the mitochondria electron transport chain -Energy released will be used to form ATP Electron carriers embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane passes electrons to electrons carriers -Electrons get transported from one carrier to another -Carriers become reduced and oxidized in the process How is ATP made in oxidative phosphorylation? Mechanism is: -Electron Transport And -Chemiosmosis Electron carriers are hydrogen ion pumps Creates concentration gradient for hydrogen ions Hydrogen can only pass through if it goes through ATP Synthase (facilitated diffusion) -provides energy to give us ATP -concentration gradient of hydrogens—electrochemical gradient ATP Synthase Complexes --special large enzymes that form ATP as protons pass through them
