1 E4 Acids, Bases, and Salts Session one of two session lab Complete Parts 1 and 2 in lab (after E3 discussion) Start or complete Part 3 as time allows Part 1. Structure and Acid-Base Properties Information Information Acids and Bases usually contain O, H, and some other element (X). Teams will be provided with compounds labeled with the formula X c O a H b (X= some element; a, b, & c = some number ) Part 1 Data Analysis The number of oxygen atoms? The number of hydrogen atoms? The position of element X in the Periodic Table? The electronegativity of element X? Are the pH and acid-base properties of X c O a H b compounds dependent on: E4 Acids, Bases, and Salts Background information pH Example: pH 7 = - log [ 1 x 10 -7 ] [H 3 O + ] = mole/liter units pH values are unitless pH = - log [H 3 O + ] pH and [H 3 O + ] DIGIT/S LEFT of the pH decimal point J = POWER of TEN by which the hydronium concentration value is multiplied. If pH = 3 .27 [H 3 O + ] = [ ? ] x 10 -3
