1 Lab 7—Phylum Arthropoda This lab may be the most challenging in terms of keeping all of the animal groups organized. This is because we are now dealing with the phylum that has the greatest known diversity of animals. What we mean by this is that the most species are placed into this phylum (over 1 million alone are insects.) As a result, you are expected to be able to recognize five subphyla (Trilobita, Chelicerata, Myriapoda, Crustacea, and Hexapoda) and seven classes under these phyla (see your lab manual for how everything fits together.) Within the Arthropoda, we are now basically dealing with a metameric organism that has become tagmotized. That is, the different segments have become fused into distinct regions. We now see regions with very specific functions. For example, in the insects, the head is composed of five segments that have become fused. The brain and many anterior sensory structures occur here. The thorax (the next body region) is a result of the fusion of three segments. In this region you find structures used for locomotion such as legs and wings. The abdomen (the last or most posterior body region) is a result of the fusion of 10 or 11 segments, depending on the
