Lab 3—Introduction to Phylogeny The main theme of this lab is to develop a practical understanding of phylogenetics. This includes how to interpret and construct cladograms. A secondary theme of the lab, although just as important, is to introduce you to the Subphylum Vertebrata. In this course we expect you to be able to interpret and understand cladograms and what it takes to develop hypotheses that explain relationships. We also expect you to be able to identify certain animal groups, at the most basic level, to Phylum, Subphylum, and Class. There are many reasons for our emphasis on learning animal groups, but these reasons can be summed up in this way: one can not begin studying biology if one does not know what the organism is that they are studying. This lab gets you thinking about these ideas. As you do this lab and all of the labs, it is important that you keep in mind the objectives and goals of each lab (these are available on the title page of each chapter and are the topics that will be covered on quizzes and the lab practical.) It is easy for students to forget how a specific exercise or idea might relate to the larger picture of evolution and animal diversity. Although we expect you to know a good deal about biology by the end of
