Project Proposal Paper 1 Project Introduction A project is a series of activities and tasks that (1) have a specific objective to be completed with certain specifications, (2)have defined start and end dates, (3) have funding or budget limits, (4) use (money, people, and equipment), and are (5) multifunctional. (Kerzner 2006). The difference between maintenance work and project management is the ability to get work to flow horizontally as well as vertically. Project managers have the responsibility to communicate and coordinate activities horizontally between line organizations. (Kerzner 2006). Line supervisors control the daily activities such as maintenance work. Project managers must develop a project plan, execute the plan, and make necessary changes to the plan. Projects affect the business in different ways. Projects are good for businesses because the return on capital investment is often very good. Often, a project has a very low degree of risk, creating a predictable market over the product life cycle. The project can also exploit the technical benefits of the business, building a base for future growth. Finally, the project adds growth potential to the business. This can be growth from the project with additions and changes, follow-up work, spare parts, maintenance and training, and a competitive advantage on the next project. (Kerzner 2006). As it was explained over the phone they are looking for a fourth bedroom that at completion would be a nursery and a large office and garage that could house the family business and equipment. The Team A business is more than equipped to handle such a project with an in house design team and over 40 field workers. Out of the 40 field workers, eight are experienced project managers with extensive home remolding projects under their belt. For this particular project Team A will assign one project manager, a field superintendent and 10 field carpenters to complete the project. The project managers responsibility will be to discuss budget and design with the Cross family, after doing so they will review the project site to ensure that the Cross family’s wants are realistic.
