MGT417 Business Continuity Management and Planning MGT417 Week One INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS CONTINUITY AND ASSESSMENT Introduction David Laster (in Shimpi, 2001) suggested “risk and uncertainty are fundamental to life, both human and corporate” (p. 3). What does this mean in an organizational environment where insurance is pervasive and the government, at least in the United States, tends to be the insurer of last resorts for catastrophes? And does a risk necessarily involve a catastrophe or can it be a small-scale event such as a power outage? Business Continuity Management and Planning involves an assessment of the organization’s activities and stakeholders as they interact with the external environment. Potential risks arise as a direct result of these aspects and also includes elements of chance based on other aspects such as the geographical location, products and services offered, and the organization’s structure. Week One material and discussions will explore how the organization’s attributes are related to the need for an effective plan. Week In Relation to the Overall Course This week we will be discussing the terminology related to Business Continuity Management and Planning as well as the characteristics of an organization that contribute to a large degree to the risks an organization may face. An assessment of the organization’s internal attributes is the first step in developing an effective plan. It is during this week that one may gain a better understanding of why the effort put into developing and implementing a plan is so important to the continued success and existence of an organization. As one progresses through the reading material and discussion it would be helpful to keep in mind how each element of the beginning process flows to the end product – the final plan. Elements from other business courses one may expect to find useful in this course – and in particular this week – include principles of management related to planning and organizing, some basic accounting and finance, and
