-1Alexandria Xereas-Gonzales Government 491 Professor Smith September 6, 2008 The Mirror Image of War In The Mirror Image of War he focuses importance on the after affects of war on states and their society and economies. He argues that states make war, but war also makes states. The modern state is synonymous with violence and military power; in other words, they can not exist without the other. He speaks of warfare and military rivalry as having played big roles in the originating roots of development of modern European states. In this ideology he quotes Machiavelli who says that strong armies are the foundation of all states and without this a state will fall and fail in all aspects necessary for success. He then references Kevin Waltz who believes that there are three images of war that exist and are directly affected by the result of war. These images are: human nature, internal structure of states, and international system. He believes that these images are accurate but must be thought of in the reverse in order to find the direct effects of war. He
