Luminescence z Emission of photons accompanying the relaxation from an excited to a ground state. z Photoluminescence—Excited state generated by absorption of a photon. z Fluorescence and phosphorescence z Chemiluminescence—Chemical reaction generates excited state. z Luminescence methods have greater inherent sensitivity than absorbance and often have greater linear dynamic range. z Disadvantage is that not all molecules luminesce.

What’s spin got to do with it? z Fluorescence involves emission from states having the same spin. z Lifetime 10 -8 sec z Phosphorescence comes from “spin forbidden” transitions. z Lifetime 1-10 -4 sec or more z Emission maximum of fluorescence and phosphorescence typically at lower energy than excitation radiation—Stokes shift.
