4/8/10 Balancing Redox Reactions 1. Assign oxidation numbers. 2. Identify half reactions. 3. Balance elements other than H and O (the components of the solvent). 4. Balance charge with H3O+ or OH−. 5. Balance O with H2O. 6. Check that the half reactions are balanced (atoms and charges). 7. Ensure that the # of e−s released in the oxidation half reaction = the # of e−s gained in the reduction half reaction. 8. Add the two half reactions together. 31
