4/8/10 What is the activity series of the elements? This series ranks the elements in order of their strength as reducing agents in aqueous solution. strongest Li --> Li+ + e− Ca --> Ca+2 + 2e− Al --> Al+3 + 3e− H2 --> 2H+ + 2e− weakest Au --> Au+3 + 3e−

4/8/10 Balancing Redox Reactions 1. Assign oxidation numbers. 2. Identify half reactions. 3. Balance elements other than H and O (the components of the solvent). 4. Balance charge with H3O+ or OH−. 5. Balance O with H2O. 6. Check that the half reactions are balanced (atoms and charges). 7. Ensure that the # of e−s released in the oxidation half reaction = the # of e−s gained in the reduction half reaction. 8. Add the two half reactions together. 31

    The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
