ME 240 Fall 2008 Problem Set 1 – Due September 12. Problem 1 A projectile is ejected into an experimental fluid at time t= 0. The initial speed is v 0 and the angle to the horizontal is θ . The drag on the projectile results in an acceleration term a D = - kv, where k is a constant and v is the velocity of the projectile. Determine the x- and y- components of both the velocity and displacement as functions of time. What is the terminal velocity? Include the effects of gravitational acceleration. Problem 2: For a limited range of motion, crank CP causes the slotted link OA to rotate (See Fig below). If β is increasing at a constant rate of 4 rad/s when β = 45 o , determine the r- and θ - components of the acceleration of pin P for this position and specify the corresponding values of dr/dt and d 2 r/dt 2 . Solve first by computing the components of Eq. 13.58-59 of our text Book (by Bedford and Fowler) and second by resolving the acceleration of P in its circular motion into r- and θ -components.
