Weak Acid Titration Nicolas Enriquez Stephen Dopler Jasmine McBeath Chem. 104B Section 25 2/23/2007 Abstract: A solution of roughly 0.1 M NaOH was used as a strong base titrant in the titration of unknown acids. A weak acid titration was carried out by 3 group members on unknown weak acids A3, B3 and C3. The pH of the solutions were measured using a pH electrode. Acid A3 was found to have an average pK a of 3.18 and a molecular weight of 159.07 g/mol it is proposed that the acid is Benzoic acid. Acid B3 was found to have an average pK a of 4.60 and a molecular weight of 75.86 g/mol it is proposed that the acid is Acetic acid. Acid C3 was found to have and average pK a of 3.95 and a molecular weight of 58.48 g/mol the acid is proposed to be cis-Cinnamic acid, but the acid is known to be diprotic.

Introduction In this lab the chemistry technique of titration will be used to determine the chemical makeup of a set of unknown acids. This will be done using a standardized solution of NaOH and a pH meter to create a table of data relating mL of NaOH added to the pH of the solution. The data collected is then used to create a titration plot. This plot allows for the equivalence point of the acid to be determined. This point allows or he determination of the concentration of weak acid at the start of titration to be made. The K a value will then be determined using data collected in the buffer region shown in the figure below. The K a value is determined using the equations
