1 Identify the principal issue presented by the source. Illegal immigrants are not only taking advantage of the American healthcare system, they are also bankrupting it by having anchor babies, exposing America to diseases such as TB and leprosy. 2 Identify any examples of bias presented by the author. If none exist, explain how you determined this. “As we fight to reclaim medicine, so we defend our nation.” This is a bit of American Pride bias, which isn’t the wrong thing. Many people want to have pride in their country, and protect what is sacred. The bias here is that the author is in the medical field, and understands the cause and effect of what illegal immigrants pose to that field. 3 Identify any areas that are vague or ambiguous. If none exist, explain how you determined this. The author is very clear is very clear with the facts, and provides statistics from very reputable sources. The author also gives detailed examples behind the explanations of the headings she uses. She also proposes a solution. 4 Do you find the source credible? Explain your reasoning. The Author is a medical lawyer, I find that with the examples that she gives, and the way she backs them up with research is very credible. She is not just throwing her opinion out into an article, but provides detailed examples for each topic. 5 Identify and name any rhetorical devices used by the author. If none exist, explain how you determined this. “A flood of illegal immigrants threatens the U.S. health care system and public health.” The author uses persuasive words like “threatens” in the article to catch attention to the subject, but also to cause a bit of fear about illegal immigrants. “Illegal immigrants bring contagious diseases” Just like the word “threatens” “Contagious Disease” will cause people to look at the illegal immigrants as having a certain taint to them. 6 Identify and name any fallacies used by the author. If none exist, explain how you determined this. Scare tactics are used in this article because of the persuasive language used. It is pretty much saying that if we don’t close our boarders, and deport all these illegal immigrants living in California, that we will go bankrupt and die of these contagious diseases they are exposing us too. Which I believe is a bit true, but it is very scary. 7 State one argument made by the author. The argument is if something isn’t done, because of the situation with so many illegal immigrants crossing the border, and getting free services which are supposed to be provided for legal, taxpaying, citizens, the U.S. medical, and social security programs will collapse because of the laws. Deport them, stop allowing “anchor babies” and “amenities” before America’s economic system crashes. 8
