Maliaka Borni Michael Dempsey Brian Kearney Angela Moon Converting Biomass in India We are presenting “converting biomass in India” as our topic for the project. The simple definition of biomass is organic material made from plants and animals. Biomass contains stored energy from the sun. Plants absorb the sun’s energy in a process called photosynthesis. The chemical energy in plants gets passed on to animals and the people that eat them. 1 It means that biomass is a renewable energy so in order to maintain them; we could grow more crops and trees. Another source is garbage but we will never run out of waste since waste will always exist. Biomass makes more significant than other resources since it is renewable energy and it is almost 15 times more powerful than most common renewable energy, which is wind. There are many types of resources that could be used as energy in biomass. Among those resources, there are divided into two large groups: energy crops and biomass residues. Energy crops are those that could be grown on farms in potentially very large quantities, just like food crops. Trees and grasses, particularly those that are native to a region, are the best crops for energy, but other, less agriculturally sustainable crops such as corn tend to be used for energy purposes at present. 2 Examples of energy crops are trees, grasses, other crops, and oil plants. 1 2 energy-works.html#Converting_Biomass_to_Energy

Trees and grasses are best energy crops since they grow fast and they both can be harvested for up to 10 to 15 years before replanting. Oil plants make good energy crops because some can be converted into a various range of fuels and manage to survive in difficult environment condition. Another group is biomass residues, which are the leftover garbage after plants have been planted. One of the interesting parts is that even garbage from city can turn into a source for biomass
