S UBORDINATORS Below are some common subordinators.   Common subordinators Adjective Clauses although even if where as even though when as if if whenever as long as since whether as though so that which after that while because though who/whom before unless whose by the time until Prep + AC P UNCTUATING S UBORDINATORS When a subordinate clause begins a sentence, it is usually followed by a comma. A subordinate clause, when it comes in the middle of a sentence, is almost always surrounded by commas. A subordinate clause is not usually set off from the sentence base when it comes at the end of a sentence. (Can you find the subordinate clauses in each of the above sentences?)

E XERCISE : Join the following pairs of sentences, using subordinate clauses. Whenever possible, write more than one version of the sentence by using different conjunctions to convey different relationships between the two ideas and by emphasizing first one clause, and then the other. Be prepared to discuss the differences in meaning these changes create. Example: The chartered 727 taxied down the runway. I wondered whether I would live to see home again. Possible revisions : 1. As the chartered 727 taxied down the runway, I wondered whether I would live to see home again. 2. Until the chartered 727 taxied down the runway, I wondered whether I would live to see home again. 3. The chartered 727 taxied down the runway as I wondered whether I would live to see home again. 1) The professor sputtered through his lectures at 250 words per minute in an effort to save time.
