Case Studies in Microscopy Name ____Yanting Wang __________ The Fatal Flu The purpose of this activity is for you to use the information presented in the results and references to determine the cause of an outbreak. Think about this information, and answer these questions as you go through the case (maximum length = 2 pages) Part 1: The Disease 1. What types of pathogens could be responsible for this seemingly fatal flu? (1 pt) The cause of this fatal flu could be either Bacterial or Viral (even fungi). Among bacteria that could be responsible for pneumonia-like illnesses are Haemophilus infuenzae, Legionella pneumophilla, Chlamydophila pneumoniae , Moraxella catarrhalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphlococcus, and Streptococcus pneumonia, Klebsiella pneumoniae. Viruses that could be responsible for pneumonia-like symptoms include Human Adenovirus, Human Coronavirus, Influenza A Virus, Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and Rhinovirus. Part 1: The Gram Stain Results 2a. The Gram stain uses light microscopy. Of the potential pathogens you listed in question 1, which ones could be seen in a Gram stain? What could you NOT see? (1 pt) Only Bacterial cells can be seen in a Gram Stain because of their small size. Gram stains primarily reach no higher resolution than 1000x. Of the ones listed, Gram (+, purple) bacteria include Staphylococcus and Streptococcus pneumonia. Gram(-, pink) bacteria include Haemophilus, Legionella, Moraxella, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Chlamydophila pneumoniae. Some large fungi cells can also be seen through the gram stain, however no useful information regarding a fungal cell envelope can be determined through staining. 2b. How big is the typical bacterial cell? How big are the cells you see in the patients’ results? Are those cells
