Upon entering the university auditorium the observer saw only one thing on stage, a lone organ. Upon witnessing this piano like instrument I thought to myself that this wasn’t going to be very interesting, however as I continued to observe the stage and its only decoration, I looked at the surrounding area and noticed the multitude of pipes and tubing that shadowed the stage above. Little did I know the organ, and by consequence, these pipes would project such a wide array of sounds. This versatility made me wonder how one instrument, however large and grand in appearance, could readily change into what sounded like several different ones just with the touch of a button or the push of a foot pedal. I attended the organ studio recital on November 30 th not because the organ is something that I am extremely interested in, but because it was at the most convenient time for me. This one concert, though, has changed my perspective on an instrument that I thought was only played by old church ladies.
