Format Instructions Introduction When completed, your dissertation or doctoral project (hereafter generically referred to as thesis ) becomes a part of the Alliant-LA Library collection. Dissertation manuscripts are also sent to ProQuest Information & Learning (PQIL) to be archived and indexed in Dissertation Abstracts International . Through the Alliant Library online catalog, interlibrary loan, and Digital Dissertations , your thesis will be accessible to students and researchers beyond Alliant. In addition, accreditation site visitors may view recent theses to evaluate Alliant graduate programs. Therefore, the content and presentation of your thesis must conform to professional and institutional standards. The Alliant Deans have selected APA style as the standard for presentation of thesis content. With a few exceptions, which will be outlined later in these instructions, your thesis should follow the guidelines set forth in the fifth edition of the Publication manual of the American Psychological Association [ APA manual ]. You should take special note of the section that addresses dissertations (pp. 321-330). The APA manual , as well as the briefer and less expensive Concise rules of APA style , may be purchased at major book outlets. A reference copy is available in the Alliant-LA Library. In addition to APA style, specific format standards have been adopted to ensure that thesis manuscripts are consistent with current Alliant practices and are prepared properly for binding and for microfilming by PQIL. To enhance the readability of manuscripts, Alliant format standards may differ in some aspects from APA style. This Alliant-LA format instruction booklet should therefore be your first reference for questions about format, and then the APA manual .
