Intro SK shared knowledge: cumulative knowledge of society, community, culture Vast majority of all knowledge Exists prior to and outside of PK PK personal knowledge: knowledge we personally have The ways SK and PK are constructed are different but share similarities Not analyzing accuracy of knowledge - just how we obtain it The justifications, claims, etc. Overlap: when SK matches PK When people internalize SK, it becomes PK “Where intellectual stuff happens” “Zone of Exchange” Questioning, exploratory, active, debating WOKs used to determine credibility of new knowledge (whether gossip or news is real or fake) SK stored as academic research Books, seminars, films, artwork, productions Methods of internalization (ex. Merchant of Venice): reading research, watching productions, etc. INTERNALIZED BY ACCEPTING AUTHORITY ON SOMETHING PK would be if you see the play or read the play Direct route: sense perception, emotions, etc. Because your absorption of knowledge is influenced by personal factors, that’s why it’s personal (vs. just buying into shared knowledge) If your PK is published and disseminated, then it’s SK AOKs are “Areas of Knowledge” (ethics, sciences, arts, psychology, history, religion, etc.) The official 8: Math Ethics Natural Sciences Religion Social Sciences Arts Indigenous knowledge systems History WOKs are “Ways of Knowing” (sensory perception, faith, academia, emotion, intuition, etc.) Others: Imagination Induction Authority Consensus Self-awareness Memory Deduction Language Reason The official 8: Sensory perception Intuition Faith Imagination Reason Memory Language Emotion Knowledge an abstract concept, not concrete It’s created and sustained by humans. (ties into “no absolute truth”) Sheer amount of SK is staggering People only absorb what they need or want Solipsism: false Nothing happens in a vacuum. Decisions are completely informed by prior knowledge Her analogy: Information is the “dots”, knowledge is the ways of connecting and linking them together On conclusions: we may reach the same ideas that are in textbooks/parents/community, but because we reach it independently it’s that much more real to us Places of my personal overlap between PK and SK: I know English I know how to Speak it Listen to it Read it Write it I know current events in the US I know how to drive I know how to play trombone I know what I was taught in school How to do arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus How to analyze language The modern Western historical narrative
