Exam 2 March 31, 2010 1. What business level strategy do you believe Target is using? Do you see any differences between it strategy and that of Wal-Mart? Target is using a differentiation strategy. This is so because they placed themselves in the market with prices low enough to entice consumers with lower budgets but not too low where consumers felt they were getting cheap goods. Target carries many designers who have made specific lines for the stores which sets the retailer apart from their biggest competition such as Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is using a least cost strategy. This is evident because they focus heavily on their low prices in their advertising and all around their stores. As of late, Target has to focus more on price, only because it is a sign of the times with the economy. Target also differentiates itself because it has a credit card for the store. Wal-Mart does not have this because the corporation is just too big and it has to now purchase the customer information from credit card companies. Target was smart in getting the credit card for the stores first and then adding the grocery items because it now has the chance to grow as big as Wal-Mart without having the restrictions of having to purchase customer information. 2.
