DELEGATION IN THE WORK ENVIRONMENT Delegation in the work environment: One of those concepts that is seen as 'essential to effective management'. Managers are encouraged to do it and subordinates tend to believe that their managers should do more of it. Mullins (1996) says that delegation is "The process of entrusting authority and responsibility to others. ..... The authorisation to undertake tasks that would otherwise be carried out by a more senior person". Delegation needs to consider the meaning of the terms Authority , Accountability and Responsibility. Delegation is a necessary function of management. Delegation is an essential feature of organisational effectiveness. Delegation is necessary to manage the work of other people. Delegation allows participation in the dynamic process within a business. Organisational structure evolve from delegation. Delegation increases as the organisation grows.
