The Brain One of the most complex things More neurons in the brain than ppl alive today Nervous system – brain + spinal cord Everything else is the peripheral nervous system The whole ns is made of neurons or nerve cells- nerve cells sends signals Spikes are always the same size- All or None Law Neurons don’t actually touch, there are these synapses between these gaps and chemicals that transmit ie(dopamine, serotonin, GABA) Different transimitters seem to do different things A neuron might be as 1 meter long but in the brain its compacted More crinkly, the cortex, = more surface area as the more advance the brain is. Brains become more crinkly because of more neurons Dolphin has a bigger brain, brain scaled to the body size Phrenology- read someones character by feeling the bumps on the head, the brain is divided into different parts- doing different things FMRI- functional magnetic resonance imaging Brain Stem and Thalamus Need to know these names: Thalamus, Midbrain, Pons, Medulla
