Introduction The importance of United States’ business practices has created an ethnocentric point of view for many Americans and has prevented the successful study of other business practices outside the country. Many Americans are overconfident in their way of life and have the tendency to undermine the importance of understanding the cultural differences of the United States and other countries. Globalization has led to endless job opportunities around the world and obtaining an understanding of foreign business practices is essential to the success of conducting business internationally. Familiarizing oneself with the culture of other countries creates a foundation of respect and regard for the country’s government and citizens. The business practices in Spain are both coincide and differ with those in the United States. As Europe’s third most populated country, possessing knowledge of Spanish business practices is imperative to succeeding in the European market. Core Values Spaniards value their culture, hold high standards, and take pride in their heritage. Their culture penetrates every aspect of their lifestyle, including the way they dress, eat, communicate, and participate in other social activities. Similar to the United States, individualism is a highly valued characteristic among Spaniards. The Spanish take pride in themselves as individuals and as members of their families (Communicaid). It is important to avoid embarrassing a Spaniard at all cost, as it can quickly destroy any business relationship. Reflecting their tendency to continuously demonstrate an image of competence and order, many Spaniards will exude an understanding of a situation or subject even when one is lacking (Communicaid). It is important to keep records of all documents in both Spanish and English to ensure clear communication.

Another way to reduce the risk of miscommunication is to avoid making assumptions. This can be achieved by thoroughly addressing the details of business agreements and situations. Greetings Greetings Personal greetings in Spain are substantially more personal than those in the United States. Personal greetings begin with a firm handshake followed by a pat on the back for men or kisses on each cheek for women (Dreamer). However, business greetings are usually limited to a handshake unless the guest and host are more familiar with each other, in which case the back slap or kiss would be initiated. Spaniards view eye contact as a demonstration of one’s confidence and honesty (Communicaid). As a dominant characteristic among Spaniards, confidence is an important element of an effective, mutual relationship. Business cards should be translated in English on one side and Spanish on the other. It is respectful to always present the Spanish side first (Kwintessentials).
