with a Grignard reagent. C. Results and Discussions Component Melting Point Determined Literature Value Triphenylmethanol 154-156°C 163-165°C Purification was successful based on melting point. The crystallized product which was expected to be triphenylmethanol had a melting point just below the accepted value of 165°C. The values of the melting point determined and the literature was at a close range which verified that the compounds were pure. Component Percent Yield Triphenylmethanol 58% There is a 58% yield for the triphenylmethanol product. The reaction was efficient and a success but it could’ve been higher. Possible minor mistakes that might have resulted in a slightly low percentage recovery are that a few specks of the crystallized product fell off the fil- ter paper when it was being transferred from the test tube onto a scale or that some of the samples may have been lost when compressed air was used to evaporate the solution in the hood.
