Mark Einsiedel USSY 204 – Systems Thinking February 14, 2010 More On the Butterfly Effect Just the other day, I was driving back to campus along the highway and noted that the speed limit was 65 miles per hour. I had never really thought about it and, like most people, generally went anywhere from five to twenty miles over the posted speed limit. On this day, I thought to myself, “What does it really matter if I go 65 or 70 miles per hour?” Then, I began to think in the ideas of system theory and at that moment I decided it does in fact matter. I thought of how many times I had come up on an intersection and seen traffic running perpendicular to me and watched someone go flying through an obvious red light. I began to think that if I had been there just mere seconds earlier, I could have been killed by this reckless driver. Then, I began to think even deeper about the whole situation. I began to think, “What is it that makes people drive those few miles per hour over the speed limit, especially those who are not even aware they are doing it?” Perhaps if they hadn’t
