Study Guide for Midterm #2 Hey Guys! For this next midterm, Dr. Patrick will be trying to make a harder exam, so be prepared and STUDY HARD! Expect more conceptual, thinking problems. A few notes: - Anything from Dr. Patrick’s and Dr. Boulanger’s lecture is fair game. (“Treat them like the Bible” he tells us :p) so be sure to look over them in its entirety at least once—the things I mention in this guideline are just topics to give a little more emphasis on. - Dr. Patrick will be holding his office hours on Wednesday and Monday, so feel free to talk to him if you have any questions. I. Microscopes - Understand the concepts of resolution and magnification - Know the different types of microscopes Be able to tell the difference between a scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) microscope. II. Cell and the Organelles - Understand why cells need a HIGH surface area to volume ratio - KNOW the difference between: Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells Plant and animal cells - Be able to determine how the “3 problems” are solved in a cell - Know the main functions and features of each eukaryotic organelle (VERY IMPORTANT!) - Endosymbiosys theory: Know what features of the chloroplast and
