1 ECE 380 Biomedical Imaging Spring 2010 Solutions Homework 3 ____________________________________________________ 1. Resolution (15 points) A CCD Camera chip of dimensions 7 x 7 mm and having 1024 x 1024 elements is focused on a square, flat area, located 0.5 m away. How many lines pairs per mm will this camera be able to resolve? Assume that the camera has a 35 mm lens. From the geometry of the problem it can be seen that 7mm/35mm= z/500mm, or z = 100 mm. So the target size is 100 mm on the side. There are a total of 1024 elements per line, so the resolution of 1 line is 1024/100 = 10 elements/mm. To obtain the line pairs we divide by 2, which gives an answer of 5 lp/mm. 2. Contrast to Noise Ratio (15 points) You are taking an image of a lung biopsy sample which contains both normal and tumor tissues. The imaging system used to form the image is subject to noise. If the two tissues types have maximum signal strengths of 61 and 93, what constraints must be placed on the noise in order to achieve a CNR greater than 0.4?
