Obama and Lincoln (lecture notes) Politics and ethics There are two ways that people think about American politics Beautiful losers - Writers, journalists etc… who write about radicals who never compromise their opinions - The only way you can be ethical and achieve ethics is to fail - John Brown was the quintessential “beautiful loser” - Politics is a process too dirty to get into and impose your ideals/change because they will be compromised “Politics is a dirty ballgame” – Joseph Rauh - Said in context of Mississippi segregationists - You have to make deals and go along with things you don’t want to you can’t achieve everything you want to - Eventually you deal away the things that really matter The ends don’t justify the means Legislature - For the good of the party itself, which may not be exactly what its supposed to be working for - Party line voting - Very first interest is the success of the party itself The institutional success of a party dwarfs the ideals on which it is organized and in turn ignores the constituents Lincoln party focuses Needs for local constituents (southerners) North and south was united because both parties existed in both regions

- But for Lincoln, northern Whigs and southern Whigs hate each other and N Democrats and S Democrats do whatever they want Lincoln is good at games but also ethical Ideological attacks on slavery The attack on slavery was an attack on slave holders as an institution and slavery as a moral It was due to part of the broad process of modernization - It was easier to spread news via newspapers (i.e. abolitionists could put out pamphlets against slave owners) - Southern politicians gag rule (makes petitions irrelevant) War in 19 th century nation states All nation states were growing technologically Armies of the modern nation state - Great military power - Comes out of technological modernization - Also comes from the nation state armies’ idea of nationalism Mass army creation and effectiveness - French Bastille war (1970s France) Existence of the state is success and power alone - Leads to effectiveness on popular politics Napoleon - Wars that grow out of French revolution recreate European map - French revolution: rise of a new kind of state, new kind of nationalism, and a new kind of army War is a force that gives us meaning
