Abstract: The weights of the samples (CuSO 4 and MgSO 4 ), their crucibles and the mass of sample after being heated (mass of the sulfide produced), were given by the TAs. Using this information and the aid of a periodic table, the following were found: mass of sample, mass of water, moles of water, moles of sample, moles of magnesium sulfate, and the hydration number of both copper sulfate and magnesium sulfate. Background: This procedure is used to form anhydrous compounds from hydrates. A hydrate is a compound with water molecules trapped in it. In certain cases, it may be needed to use anhydrous compounds instead of hydrates in a non-aqueous reaction. Procedure: Refer to Experiment 3 in Utecht, R.; Downey, T; Miller, M; Hirko, R. Observations: Of the three trials conducted for CuSO 4 the results were as follows: Trial 1: Crucible weight: 8.133g Crucible and Sample: 9.139g Crucible and Amount of Copper Sulfide: 8.786g
