Scheme of Analysis- Assignment 2 “Fair Game” ions= Na + , NH 4 + , K + , OH - , Cl - , NO 3 - , SO 4 2- , HSO 4 - Description of Samples: Sample 1: color: Sample 2: color: odor: odor: crystal structure: crystal structure: Na + and K + Flame Test Pour a few milliliters of 15 M HNO 3 in a test tube, then place wire in test tube with corkscrew secured on top. Shake to clean wire. Rinse off acid with deionized water. This should then produce no color when you stick just the wire into the flame with nothing on it. Orange color (Long-lasting)= Na + exists (K + and NH 4 + could still be present ) Purple color= K + exists (NH 4 + could still be present) *Na + is not present * No color= NH 4 + is possibly present *Na + and K + are not present * Sample 1: Sample 2: NH 4 + Volatility Solid in crucible over Bunsen burner (white smoke)= NH 4 + exists Smell of NH 3 may be produced Also, add 1 M NaOH to the solid and suspend red litmus paper above. Turns blue= NH 4 +
