CHAPTER 6: Thermochemistry Thermodynamics; study of heat and its transformations to and from other forms of energy Thermochemistry; branch of thermodynamics that deals with the heat involved with chemical and physical changes Fundamental premise o When energy is transformed from one object to another Open system; heat goes exchanged, water vapor exchanged (mass and energy exchanged) Closed system; no exchange except open to exchange of heat (energy exchanged) Isolated system; nothing exchanged!!! Temperature and heat… o Temp- relative to one another o Heat- energy transferred…transferred from object to cold until reach same temp, called thermal equilibrium 2 nd law of thermodynamics Change in energy (E) = q+ w=heat + work o Change in E= change in Heat(ignore work) Energy; capacity to do work or transfer heat Heat; form of energy that flows between 2 objects b/c of their diff in temp Can things of same temp have diff energies?? o
