Scheme of Analysis- Assignment 9 Emily Gottfried Sxn 0741 Fair Game ions and compounds Insoluble: CaCO 3 , MgCO 3 , Ca(OH) 2 , Mg(OH) 2 , CaSO 4 Cations: Na + , K + , NH 4 + , Ca 2+ , Mg(OH 2 ) 6 2+ , Al(OH 2 ) 6 3+ , Zn(OH 2 ) 6 2+ , Ag(OH 2 ) 2 + , Anions: Cl - , SO 4 2- , NO 3 - , OH - (or O 2- ), HSO 4 - , CO 3 2- , HCO 3 - , S 2- , HS - , Unknown 9A is guaranteed to be a pure salt, therefore containing, only one cation and one anion unless it is an “alum,” in which case it will contain SO 4 2- and 2 cations. Possible alums include: K[Al(OH 2 ) 6 ](SO 4 ) 2 2 * 6H 2 O and NH 4 [Al(OH 2 ) 6 ](SO 4 ) 2 2 * 6H 2 O Unknown 5B may be a mixture of two or more pH-compatible salts and may be soluble, insoluble, or both. General solubility rules : - All nitrates are soluble. - Nearly all sodium, potassium, and ammonium salts are soluble. - All chlorides, bromides, and iodides are soluble except silver. - All sulfates are soluble except those of strontium, barium, and lead(II), which are insoluble, and those of calcium and silver, which are moderately soluble. - All carbonates are insoluble except those of sodium, potassium, and ammonium. - All sulfides are insoluble except those of the alkali metals, the alkaline earth metals, and ammonium. - All hydroxides are insoluble except those of the alkali metals. The hydroxide of calcium is moderately soluble. - Ammonium hydroxide does not exist . Description - color - odor - crystal structure/shape - other observations? TESTS ON ORIGINAL SAMPLE A. Flame Test- Na + , K + , and NH 4 + - Clean the end of the flame test wire by dipping in 16M HNO 3 and then rinsing with deionized water. Check that the wire is clean by inserting the wire into the flame. If no color change occurs, the wire is clean. - Long-lasting orange flame: Na + is present (K + and NH 4 + could be present). -
