1. Compare the Mantiklos “Apollo” Bronze figurine; the Hermes Kriophoros Bronze figur- ine; and the Torso from a Roman copy of Classical Greek statue. Which pose is more flu- id? dynamic? beautiful? Why? What elements have changed in the progress of artistically interpreting the essence of the human body? How is techne at work here? ̄ All three sculptures show a different interpretation of the human body as seen by different artists. The choice of material plays a vital role in showing what the artist has in mind about his piece. The shape of the statue, the colour, the detailing, the ordainment, everything plays a different role in showing something different about what the artist has to say about his statue. Out of the three, the Torso from a Roman copy of a Classical Greek statue is undoubtedly the most fluid of them all. The controposto stance of the torso is much more relaxed and natural than the straight dominating poses of the other two. The division of the body parts in the Mantiklos “Apollo” Bronze figurine acts as a barrier between it and fluidity, however each individual part is very flowing and thus fluid. The statue of Hermes is also flowing, but the division in the drape and the thighs, and the one near the waist makes it less fluid. In interpreting the human body, the Roman copy of the Greek statue has remained very accurate to the true body. There is no room for any artistic additions as the other two statues might have. This one in particular has chosen to represent the male body as it is,
