Thursday, January 24, 2008 - Enlightenment phase of the American Revolution - 1618-1648, 30-year war. o Culmination of a lot of trends in the protestant revolution. o Incredibly bloody and vicious war. o Ended with the treaty of Westphalia o Human rights really come to be after 30-year old. o The puritans objected to Anglicism. Puritans immigrated to America, or after staying for a period in Holland. When they came to America, they were not fleeing Europe, they just had a mission to complete. They came on an errand to establish a city on a hill, that Europeans would see and try to emulate. They had every belief that once the reformation was successful that they would return to Europe. Very similar in fundamentalist practices to the modern day Taliban. Crime to miss Church, sing, dance, and to celebrate Christmas. Very restrictive code. (17 th century equivalent). They did not constitute a thick theocracy. Theocracy- direct connection where the religious leaders are also the political leaders. Religious leaders were not always the political leaders.
