August 29, 2007 The Creation of the Presidency - What’s going on in the presidency o Bush was in New Orleans Important for him to be there on anniversary He was not there 2 years ago, because 2he was on his ranch. - Article 2 is a very ambiguous article. - Madison was Father of the Constitution but not Father of the Presidency. - During the course of the convention the presidency developed on two lines: o The office was defined with greater clarity and specificity o The weak office, subordinate to the legislature was made stronger. - The delegates knew what they did NOT want? o An executive so strong that he could trample liberty. ie: King o An executive so weak that he was unable to check a runaway legislature. Ie: many state governors - Supporters of a strong presidency o James Wilson of Pennsylvania-Lawyer Was perhaps the most “learned” of the founders He wanted the president to be popularly elected. o
