Examination 1, Spring 2010, AMS 311
Examination 1 will be Friday, February 19.
My Exam week office hours will be Monday, Feb 15, from 12:30; Tuesday, Feb 16,
from 1:2:30; the regularly scheduled office hour from 1 to 2; and Thursday from 1 to
2:30. The TAs will post extra office hours as well. You will not need access to any tables
for this examination.
There will be five questions
1.
Bayes’ theorem. For example, the probability of a false positive given the
sensitivity and specificity of
a medical procedure.
2.
Axiomatic probability theory (proof of a theorem)
3.
Selected homework problem or class example problem.
4.
Conditional probability problem.
5.
Combinatorial probability problem.
Instructions for the examinations in this course: You may use one 8½” by 11” sheet of
notes and an approved calculator in the examination provided that you permit the proctor
to inspect it during the examination. Any tables and graphs that are needed to solve
problems will be provided. You may not use any other assistance during the examination.
